Big West power UOP too much for 'Runners

Californian staff report

STOCKTON -- Junior outside hitter Sarah Norman pounded out a match-high 15 kills, but it wasn't enough to stop Big West Conference contender University of the Pacific from earning a 30-16, 30-21, 30-22 win at the Spanos Center.

"We didn't compete well tonight and when that happens against a team as talented as Pacific this is the result," said CSUB coach John Price. "We didn't play poorly, but we weren't ready to play and Pacific is very physical and very skilled."

Bakersfield (5-15 overall) had just six total kills in game one but still trailed only 10-8 before the Tigers ended the game with a 20-8 rush for the win. The Roadrunners hit a solid .268 in the second game to stay as close as 18-15. But with Pacific hitting .398, their was no room for the 'Runners to catch up.

Cross country team places 7th

FULLERTON -- Lina Nunez and Christa McCann helped CSUB's women's cross country team close out the 2007 season on a high note, as both runners posted sub 20-minute times at the Titan Invitational Friday evening at Cal State Fullerton.

"The team ran really well," said CSUB Head Coach Maija Rohde. "We're really excited with the way we ended the season."

Nunez finished 25th overall in a time of 19:38 and McCann came in close behind in 32nd, posting a time of 19:50, to lead the Roadrunners to a seventh-place team finish.

Women's soccer team wins

A pair of late first-half goals by Natalie Haigh and Jackie Torvestad held strong as the Roadrunners claimed a 2-0 win over Biola University on the CSUB Main Soccer Field.

The win, the second in their last three outings, moved the 'Runners to 4-10-1 on the season while the Eagles fell to 3-10-2 overall.
