49er doubles team moves into quarters

The Long Beach State doubles team of Stephanie Bengson and Hannah Grady advanced to today's quarterfinal round of the ITA West Regional on Friday with an 8-3 victory over USC's Leyla Entakhabi and Lindsay Kintsler in San Diego.

The 49ers nearly had another team reach the quarters when Deborah Armstrong and Jessica Weeks held a 6-5 lead over UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin and Stephanie Wetmore. The third-seeded Bruins team, however, advanced with a 9-7 victory.

CROSS COUNTRY

Long Beach State freshman Steven DeCastro finished in 13th place overall in 26:25 at the Cal State Fullerton Invitational.

For the women, Jelani Carter finished 51st overall in 20:33.

MEN'S SOCCER

LBCC 1, L.A. Harbor 1

Sophomore Alex Reuss scored a penalty kick in the 90th minute to give the Vikings (6-4-5, 3-3-2) a South Coast Conference draw with the Seahawks (6-5-7, 1-3-4).

Harbor's Miguel Veliz opened the scoring in the 81st minute. LBCC's goal came after Chris Overton was taken down in the penalty area.

Mt. SAC 2, Cerritos 1

With Ivan Perez, Billy Gutierrez and Norm Mariscal on the bench with injuries, the Mounties (14-0-2, 6-0-2) earned an important SCC victory over the

defending state champs.

Cameron Sims and Karlos Gonzalez each scored for Mt. SAC, ranked No. 2 in the state and the nation, for a 2-0 lead. Freshman Gerardo Torres scored for the fourth-ranked Falcons (11-3-4, 4-1-2) in the final seconds of the game.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

LBCC 4, L.A. Harbor 0

Freshman Kaitlynn Estes scored three times from her attacking defender position and led the Vikings (12-2-2, 5-2) to an easy SCC victory at home.

Franki Montgomery also scored for LBCC.

MEN'S WATER POLO

LBCC 15, Citrus 8; LBCC 15, Ventura 10

Sophomore driver Djoko Radunovic had 12 combined goals and goalie George Alberson made 10 saves in a pair of victories for the Vikings (16-7) at the Golden West Tournament.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

LBCC 3, L.A. City 0

Sophomore Alo Taumanupepe had 16 kills and seven digs for the Vikings (11-4, 5-2) in a 30-7, 30-26, 30-18 SCC victory at home.
