UC IRVINE UPDATE
WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM EDGES UC SANTA BARBARA
The UC Irvine women’s soccer team defeated UC Santa Barbara, 2-1, Sunday night in Big West Conference play at Anteater Stadium. The win was UCI’s first conference victory since Oct. 23, 2005 when the Anteaters beat Long Beach State, 2-0. UC Irvine improved its record to 7-5-1 overall and 1 -1 in conference. In the eighth minute senior Makenzie Beahm passed the ball up the field to senior Kim Horn. Horn then flicked the ball on to freshman Tanya Taylor, who beat the keeper on the breakaway to give UCI a 1 -0 lead. The Gauchos tied the match at 1 -1 with the clock winding down in the first half as Kailyn Kugler took a pass from Jacqui Simon inside the box to score.
The Anteaters came right back, opening the second half with a goal. Senior Frankee Kelly found Tonya Taylor again and Taylor put the ball away for her second goal of the night at the 45:46 mark.
The Anteaters held on for the 2-1 victory. Freshman keeper Danielle de Seriere had six saves for UCI.
