San Diego State, USD host women's tennis tournament

UNION-TRIBUNE

An Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional tournament for women with a number of nationally ranked players among the 92 in the singles draw begins tomorrow at the Barnes Center. Finals are Monday.

San Diego State and USD are co-hosts for the event in which players from 16 schools are to compete.

“It probably is one of the top regionals in the United States,” said Aztecs coach Peter Matera. “It is so laden with nationally ranked players that it can elevate someone from relative obscurity to a high national ranking.”

Sarah Fansler of USC, a finalist in this tournament a year ago, is the No. 1 singles seed, followed, in order, by Reza Zalameda of UCLA, Tracy Lee of UCLA and Nadia Abdala, an Arizona State player from Chula Vista. Nadia Abdala is to play doubles with her sister, Leila.

Monica Wiesner of USD is the No. 15 seed and Eliska Krausova of SDSU the No. 16 seed.

Other schools with players competing include are Arizona, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, UNLV and Pepperdine.
