Angels To Announce Changes In Front Office

Bill Stoneman is expected to announce Tuesday that he is stepping down as general manager of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to become a consultant with the baseball team.

The Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register newspaper reported that Tony Reagins, the Angels' director of player development, is expected to be named today to succeed Stoneman.

The team has called a morning news conference to make what is described as "a major announcement." Tim Mead, the Angels' vice president of communications, declined to elaborate.

Stoneman, 63, was named as the Angels' general manager in November 1999, hired Mike Scioscia as manager and built the team that won the 2002 World Series.

The Angels have reached the playoffs three of the past four seasons, but were swept by the Boston Red Sox in both 2004 and 2007.

Stoneman has drawn criticism from sports columnists, sports talk show hosts and fans for his refusal to trade prospects for veteran players, especially a power hitter.

Reagins, 40, a Cal State Fullerton graduate, joined the Angels as an intern in the baseball operations department in 1992, was named a marketing assistant in 1994 and returned to the baseball operations department in 1998.
