Broncos get commitment from point guard

By Nick Jezierny

The Boise State men's basketball program has landed a junior college point guard who will have three years of eligibility beginning in the 2008-09 season.

La'Shard Anderson, a freshman at Irvine Valley College in California, committed after visiting Boise State over the weekend. He is expected to sign during the early signing period next month, he said Tuesday.

"I liked the team and how everyone in Boise is involved in sports and with the teams," Anderson said.

The 6-foot-1 guard played at Serra High in San Diego. He averaged 21.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.1 steals as a senior. He will play his first season of JC ball this season.

"I think it's a really good get for Boise State," Irvine Valley assistant coach Andy Ground said. "La'shard has a lot of potential. He can really defend and run a team. He had to score a lot in high school, because there wasn't much around him. We like his ability to run a team and how he puts pressure on other teams' guards while defending them."

Anderson was a late academic qualifier out of high school, and because of that, he couldn't land a scholarship at the school he wanted to attend.

That's why he opted to play at Irvine Valley this season and will play for three years at BSU, which opens camp Friday.

Anderson also took an official visit to Central Florida and made unofficial visits to Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State. Out of high school, Anderson said he was recruited by San Diego, Utah State and UC Santa Barbara.

BSU coaches aren't permitted to comment about recruits until they sign national letters of intent.
