Cal Poly woman's soccer team works overtime against Titans
Leger’s first goal helps Cal Poly earn its first Big West victory of year
Cal Poly’s Erica Leger picked a great time to net her first goal of the season.
The Pismo Beach product scored with just under four minutes remaining in the second overtime Sunday to lift the Mustangs women’s soccer team to its first Big West Conference victory over Cal State Fullerton.
With the 1-0 victory at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, Cal Poly improved to 2-8-1 overall and 1-1 in Big West play.
Cal State Fullerton, last year’s Big West Tournament champion, fell to 6-5-1 and 1-2, losing back-to-back matches for the first time this season.
Leger’s unassisted strike came in the 107th minute. Sharon Day placed a corner kick in front of the goal when Cal State Fullerton goalkeeper Shayla Sabin came out and collided with a Cal Poly player. The ball landed in the middle of the box where Leger right-footed a shot into the upper-left corner.
Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton combined on 25 shots with Cal Poly goalkeeper Alli Tramel and Sabin each making seven saves.
Women’s tennis
Cal State Fullerton’s Hannah Grady pulled off a sweep at the hands of Cal Poly players on the final day of the Fullerton Intercollegiate.
Grady beat Cal Poly’s Brittany Blalock 6-2, 6-1 in the singles finals.
She also teamed up with Stephanie Bengson to beat the top-seeded Mustangs team of Blalock and Steffi Wong 8-2 in the doubles final.
