Poly men’s soccer team nets first tie
Unable to capitalize on playing a UC Riverside men’s soccer team a man down for much of the second half and two overtimes, Cal Poly ended a physical game Saturday with its first tie of the season, 2-2.
“We need to do a better job starting games off well and protecting a lead,” Cal Poly head coach Paul Holocher said.
Cito Soriano put UC Riverside (3-3-3, 0-1-1 Big West Conference) ahead 1-0 in the 31st minute on a header off of a counter-attack corner kick.
In the second half, Cal Poly (6-1-1, 1-0-1) put Ryan Anderson up top for the first time all year, and it paid dividends quickly, as he tied the score in the 55th minute.
Soriano then had to leave the game after receiving a red card. Cal Poly’s Kyle Montgomery shot a free kick into the top right corner in the 64th minute, giving the Mustangs a 2-1 lead over a UC Riverside squad that finished with five yellow cards.
Cal Poly lost its advantage only a few minutes later, though, as K.J. Lenehan deflected a Highlanders shot into the goal.
The Mustangs, who outshot UC Riverside 18-4 after the half, controlled the ball for most of the overtimes, but Montgomery hit the goal post and Lenehan the crossbar in failing to put Cal Poly ahead.
