LBSU roundup: Fullerton semifinals full of 49er women
Singles and doubles players still alive.

Staff reports

Long Beach State's women's tennis team is assured of placing a player in today's singles final of the Cal State Fullerton Invitational after Hannah Grady and Deborah Armstrong reached the semifinals on the same side of the bracket.

Grady, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, advanced with victories of Loyola Marymount's Tina Razloznik, 6-1, 6-2, and Cal Poly's Diane Filip, 6-1, 6-2. She'll meet Armstrong in today's semifinal round. Armstrong defeated Shannon Kelly of Cal Poly, 7-6, 6-2, and Cal State Northridge's Kristy Fournell, 7-5, 6-4.

The 49ers also placed a pair of doubles teams in the semis, although on opposite sides of the bracket. Grady and Stephanie Bengson went 2-0 to advance, as did Armstrong and Jessica Weeks.

Grady and Bengson will face Brooke Doane and Kanykey Koichumanova of Cal State Northridge in their semifinal. In the other, Armstrong and Weeks play Cal Poly's Brittany Blalock and Steffi Wong.

Men's water polo

Junior Pavle Filipovic scored a career-high four goals and goalie Steve MacKenzie made 14 saves to lead the 49ers to a 12-10 victory over host UC San Diego.

Filipovic, a transfer from Long Beach City College, scored twice in the first half as

LBSU (9-4) built an 8-4 halftime lead. Long Beach, ranked No. 7 in the nation, eventually built its lead to 11-7 after three quarters and the No. 12 Tritons never got closer than two goals.

Jeff Greenwood and Nick Korsgarden each scored twice for LBSU. Steven Donohoe had four goals to lead UCSD.

The 49ers, who have won two consecutive road games, return home against Brown (noon) and MIT (2 p.m.) today.

Women's soccer

The backline for the 49ers took another hit Friday night in a hard-fought 3-2 victory at Pacific in their Big West Conference opener.

Freshman defender Grace Shevlin went down late in the first half with a severe ankle injury. X-rays proved negative, but Shevlin will not be available for today's match at UC Davis and a timetable for her recovery is uncertain.

It was announced earlier in the week that central defender Julie Megorden would miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

Combined with Shevlin's injury, it leaves the 49ers short-handed on the back end. However, coach Mauricio Ingrassia has a deep roster and will give the likes of Cat Gray and Amanda Perry more minutes. Gray scored her first career goal in Friday's win.

The 49ers also lost freshman forward Kristen Kiefer late in the game with an ankle injury, too, but she is listed as day to day.

However, her minutes could be offset by Kim Silos, who missed last Sunday's game with an ankle injury of her own and played limited minutes Friday.

The 49ers take an 8-4-0 overall record into UC Davis (5-5-0, 1-1-0), which won last year's meeting between the two teams.
