College Roundup: Cal Poly drops double-overtime soccer game to UC Riverside
Mustangs unable to turn big shots edge into Big West women’s win

The Cal Poly women’s soccer team outshot visiting UC Riverside 25-8, but that margin could not translate into a win for the Mustangs.

Sharon Day’s unassisted goal in the 61st minute of the second half was all the scoring Cal Poly was capable of pulling out during its 2-1 double-overtime loss to the Highlanders on Friday.

Day led Cal Poly (1-8-1, 0-1 Big West) with six shots during the team’s first Big West game of the season, and she was closely followed by Ashley Val-lis’ five.

The shooting barrage was stonewalled by Riverside goalie Deanna Borgelt, who finished with nine saves.

Riverside’s Jenna Leonti was responsible for scoring the game-winning goal in the 108th minute.

Leonti’s shot was only one of two which Cal Poly goalie Allie Tramel saw in the overtime periods. For the game, she was able to stop three of the five shots on goal produced by Riverside (7-4, 1-0).

•Cuesta 1, Oxnard 0: Freshman Esther Neel scored the game-winning goal for the Cougars (5-4-1, 1-0 WSC) during their first Western State Conference game of the season.

After taking a pass at about 30 yards out from freshman mid-fielder Nicole Meza, Neel maneuvered past several Oxnard defenders before getting a shot off inside of the right post with 13 minutes left.

Cuesta’s freshman goalkeeper Madi Urtusuastegui had six saves, three of which included contact from Oxnard offensive players, to preserve the shutout.

Women’s Tennis

Cal State Fullerton Invitational: The Mustangs had five of its singles players and three doubles teams advance to the round of 16 at the Cal State Fullerton Invitational.

Making the jump to the next round are singles players Diane Filip, SteffiWong, Whitney Peterson, Shannon Brady and Brittney Blalock.

Brady played her way into the next round by defeating No. 3 seed Kanykey Koichumanova of Cal State Northridge 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles, Cal Poly’s No. 1 team of Blalock and Wong were given a first-round bye. Peterson and teammate Filip advanced, along with the team of Amy Markoff and Brooke Pletcher.

Women’s water polo

•Cuesta 5, Foothill 3; Cerritos 8, Cuesta 6: The Cougars split a pair of games to open the Pasadena City Tournament with a 1-1 record.

Five different Cuesta scorers recorded goals during the team’s win over Foothill, including Chelsea Curtis and Ashley de Goede.

In the day’s second game, Cuesta (12-5) trailed Cerritos 5-1 at the half, but the Cougars fought back in the fourth quarter with five goals. Unfortunately for Cuesta, its scoring flurry went to waste because Cerritos ended the game by scoring twice in the final minute.

Cuesta was without standout scorer Whitney Levicki for the second game after she suffered a broken nose against Foothill. Cuesta coach Pete Schuler said the team’s trainer cleared Levicki to play in today’s games against Pasadena (10 a.m.) and Orange Coast (2 p.m.).

Men’s water polo

•Cuesta 18, Orange Coast 5; Cuesta 10, Grossmont 7:

The Cougars swept their two games on the opening day of the Citrus Tournament.

Chad Dugger scored four times during Cuesta’s lopsided win over Orange Coast. Mitch Brewer and Bryan Buhagiar both scored twice.

In the day’s second game, Cuesta (11-3) found itself tied with Grossmont after the first half but that quickly changed. The Cougars went on a 4-1 scoring run in the third period and that margin proved to be enough to hold on for the win.

Today, Cuesta plays the top-ranked team in the state, Golden West, at 10:30 a.m.
