Alburez is Runner of the Week

Cal State L.A. senior Karla Alburez has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association women’s cross country Runner of the Week for the second time this season.

She was honored for leading the Golden Eagles to a team victory at the Pepperdine Invitational last Saturday. Running on a muddy 6,000-meter course, Alburez placed second out of 112 runners in 20 minutes, 8.10 seconds. USC’s Sarah Cocco was first in 20:00.10.

Cal State L.A. also had Maribel Cespedes place seventh, Liliana Hernandez 12th, Shawna Burger 21st and Cynthia Rios 22nd.

Alburez, a product of Marshall High School and L.A. City College, was previously honored for the week of Sept. 3-9 after capturing the Cal State Fullerton “Season Opener.” She won that race by 27 seconds and led the Golden Eagles to a second-place finish behind Cal State Fullerton. A returning All-American in both cross country and track and field, Alburez is a four-time winner of weekly honors over the past two seasons.

At LACC, she was second in the 3,000 steeplechase at the state championships.

Cal State L.A. is ranked first in the NCAA Division II West Region and was seventh in the most recent national poll.

Cal State Dominguez Hills’ goalkeeper Alyssa Congdon is the CCAA women’s soccer Player of the Week.

A true freshman from South Torrance High, Congdon posted two shutouts against No. 2 U.C. San Diego and Cal State L.A. last week in helping the Toros go 1-0-1.

She had 10 saves, including five in the second half, of a scoreless tie against San Diego.

The Toros resume action Oct. 2, when Western Washington pays Carson a visit.
