Cal Poly men’s soccer wins again at home

Cal Poly’s men’s soccer team remained undefeated at home with a 1-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday before 1,514 fans in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

Ca Poly improved to 5-1 overall and is 3-0 at home this season.

In the 66th minute, Cal Poly’s Daniel Cumming ran along the edge of the box and took a pass, tapped it behind him and found a streaking Julian Alvarez.

Alvarez touched it once and drilled a shot past Cal State Bakersfield goalkeeper Steve Trojanowski, who had charged five yards off his line.

Cal Poly limited the Roadrunners to three shots and only one on goal while Eric Branagan-Franco recorded his fourth shutout of the season.

“Our back line played extremely well today,” Cal Poly head coach Paul Holocher said. “We outshot Cal State Bakersfield 15-3 in what was a very scrappy game.”

Offensively, the Mustangs littered the Roadrunners’ goal with shots but could only make good on one attempt.

Eleven of the the Mustangs’ 15 shots were on goal. Trojanowski had 10 saves for Cal State Bakersfield.

Cal Poly opens Big West Conference play Saturday with a 7 p.m. game at Cal State Fullerton.
