Titans hand Pacific first Big West defeat

A big night by freshman outside hitter Svenja Engelhardt wasn't enough to help the Pacific women's volleyball team stay unbeaten in the Big West Conference.

Engelhardt posted a match-high 30 points, recording a career-high 23 kills, six service aces and one block solo, but the Tigers fell in four games to Cal State Fullerton on Saturday night at Titan Gym. Game scores were 30-27, 30-28, 16-30, 30-24.

Junior outside hitter Alexa Anderson hit .477 with 22 kills and 13 digs, and the Tigers (7-3, 1-1 Big West) hit .339 as a team, 54 points higher than the Titans (7-5, 2-0).

"Svenja and Alexa both played great," Pacific coach Charlie Wade said. "We've been waiting to get some nice numbers out of the outsides, and it's kind of ironic that the night they both hit for a high percentage, we lose."

Engelhardt has led the Tigers in scoring in their first two conference matches. She had 12 kills in a victory over UC Davis, but hit negative-.024. Against the Titans, she hit .360 with five errors on 50 total attacks.

"She's only going to get better," Wade said. "She has the skills and she's a nice athlete, so the more she's out there, the more comfortable she's going to be."
