Close but still a winner

CLAREMONT - Jared Cicon is $5,700 richer.

The amateur commercial producer's Heinz ad was a runner-up in the company's "Top This TV" ad contest. Contestants submitted their own 30-second ad spots. Cicon's ad aired Monday morning during "The Today Show," and he was awarded the prize money.

"It's two and a half months' rent, and I'll take it," Cicon said.

The winning ad aired Sunday during the Emmy telecast, and the producer of the ad was awarded $57,000. Winners were determined by online voters.

Extra benefit at Cal Poly

POMONA - There's more reason than ever to be a Cal Poly Pomona employee.

Friday through Sunday, Cal Poly faculty and staff can tour a new townhome facility in north Pomona in a program that offers them affordable housing possibilities. The program, through the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, involves 34 new townhomes on the north side of Foothill Boulevard east of Garey Avenue. They are being built by the Olson Co. in conjunction with the foundation.

There are two townhome floor plans, one for $365,000, the other for $395,000. If all the townhomes aren't purchased by Cal Poly employees by their completion date - 14 will be ready in December - they'll be offered to employees at other colleges, such as Mt. SAC, Cal State Fullerton or Cal State L.A. Information: www.foundation.csupomona.edu/ha/fairoaks.aspx.

Different issues for the mayor

POMONA - Mayor Norma Torres will speak at a luncheon Thursday at Western University of Health Sciences, but it won't be to discuss city issues.

Instead, she's expected to speak on students' participation in legislation along with their involvement in matters that affect health-care providers. According to information from the university, those matters include bills related to security prescription pads for Medicare prescriptions and recognizing pharmacists as medication therapy management providers.

The mayor's also expected to speak on the reimbursement of pharmacists' services.

The luncheon event, limited to students, faculty and alumni, is organized by the American Pharmacists Association and co-sponsored by the Western University Alumni Association, according to university information.
