Local students awarded GI Forum scholarships

OCEANSIDE ---- Eighteen local students received scholarships Saturday night during the annual mariachi concert and dinner hosted by the American GI Forum Oceanside chapter at Martin Luther King Middle School.

The event, a fundraiser for the scholarship program, benefits students who participate in the Advancement Via Individual Learning (AVID) program. It featured a performance by Mariachi Chula Vista, a musical group consisting of students from Sweetwater Union High School District, where more than half the schools offer mariachi classes. San Diego Gas & Electric Co. is a major sponsor of the GI Forum.

The scholarship winners and the colleges they're attending are Patricia Calderon, UC San Diego; Susana Cisneros, Cal State Northridge; Cortney Cortez, UCSD; Jorge Cortez, Palomar College; Cassandra Cruz, San Diego State University; Daniel De Robles, Cal State San Marcos; Lizette Gamboa, MiraCosta College; Divina Hernandez, MiraCosta College; Paul Middleton, Purdue University; Lizet Medina, Cal State Fullerton; Erika Morales, Cal Poly University; Josue Olvera, MiraCosta College; Christian Parker, Cal State Northridge; Edward Perez, Johnson Community College in Kansas City; Justine Pulealii, MiraCosta College, Juana Reyes, UC Riverside; Bianca Robinson, CSUSM, and Carlos Solorzano, CSUSM.
