College notes: Big Ten honors Stacy

FORWARD JAKE STACY (Forest Hills Central) was selected the Big Ten Men's Soccer Player of the Week after the junior scored his first two goals of the season and added an assist in the Wolverines' two wins in the California State-Fullerton Tournament. Stacy was named to the all-tournament team.

CALVIN COLLEGE used a three-game sweep of Adrian College in the Knights' Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association volleyball opener to extend their league winning streak to 33 straight matches. Calvin is ranked 10th in Division III, and is led by 2006 All-American hitters Kristen Kalb and Molly Krikke and fellow senior Katie Zondervan at setter.

OUTSIDE HITTER LAUREN REBER of Grand Valley State was chosen the Great Lakes Conference's North Division Volleyball Player of the Week thanks to helping the 11th-ranked team in Division II to a 4-0 record at the Ashland University Invitational. Reber averaged 3.9 kills, 2.7 digs, 0.4 blocks and 4.6 points while enjoying a .368 hitting percent. The Lakers host Michigan Tech today at 7 p.m. and Northern Michigan Saturday at 4 p.m.

TWO LOCAL PLAYERS had marquee games for Northern Michigan during the Wildcats' 42-41 overtime loss to Hillsdale College in the Superior Dome. Sophomore running back Mark Bossuah (Forest Hills Central) set school and dome records with 317 rushing yards with a career-high 35 carries. And senior quarterback Buddy Rivera (Grandville) was 17-for-27 passing for 235 yards and four touchdowns. Rivera now has 40 career touchdown throws and is 38 yards from 6,000 passing yards.

JUNIOR LINEBACKER TOM KORTE (Catholic Central) had a team-high 14 tackles, a quarterback sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to help Hillsdale gain its overtime win at Northern. The Chargers are 2-0 for the first time since 1999, and earned their first road win since Sept. 2, 2006.

THREE HOPE COLLEGE ATHLETES were recognized as Players of the Week in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Linebacker Drew Weigel had 12 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in the Flying Dutchmen's 36-17 loss to Central (Iowa) College to be selected the league's best defensive player. Outside hitter Nora Slenk (Holland Christian) was named the week's top volleyball player thanks to 4.2 kills and 2.2 digs in three league wins. And goalie Michael Amerman was voted men's soccer's top defender because of a 1-0 loss to Wheaton (Ill.) College, the No. 19 team in Division III, and a 1-0 overtime win over North Park (Ill.) College.

CAITLIN BENNETT of Grand Valley was chosen the GLIAC Women's Golfer of the Week following a 16th-place finish at Michigan State's Mary Fossum Invitational. The sophomore shot 77-74-78--229 with 36 pars.

MIDFIELDER JAREN SOULE (Grand Haven) of Cornerstone University and Aquinas College goalie Kristina Gladstone were named women's soccer's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, while Cornerstone outside hitter Rebecca Baker (Tri-unity Christian) earned the league's Volleyball Player of the Week award. Soule led the Golden Eagles to a 2-1 record with three goals. Gladstone had four saves in a pair of WHAC wins, and Baker had 62 kills, 77 digs and 14 blocks to help Cornerstone win three of four matches.

DANIELLE DAVIS, a former guard/forward at Ottawa Hills, has been added to the Ferris State women's basketball roster. The freshman is currently enrolled at FSU. Davis averaged 22 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists as a senior, was a three-time All-City League selection for the Bengals.
