College notebook

Women's soccer

Maryland freshman Annesia Faulkner saw action in the first four games of the season for the women's soccer team. The freshman striker is a Laurel resident and 2007 graduate of Pallotti. She had one shot on goal for the Terps, who were 2-1-1 after beating Loyola Marymount on Sept. 9.

Laurel resident Chelsea Sprague, a Reservoir High graduate, is also on the Maryland roster. She is a freshman defender.

Amy Strebin, who played two years for Pallotti after transferring from Meade, is now a freshman for Cal State Fullerton. Her family moved from Maryland to California in December 2006, and she played soccer for her new high school in California.

Football

Femi Akinwande, a Laurel resident and Roosevelt High graduate, is on the roster of the Maryland football team. The defensive back began his college career at Duquesne in Pittsburgh. He played in high school at St. John's College High School in Washington, D.C.

Laurel High graduate Philip Daley is a junior reserve linebacker for Howard University. The Bisons began the season Sept. 8 with a 31-24 loss at home to rival Hampton, the defending champ in the MEAC. Howard has lost its last 11 games to Hampton.

Laurel resident Darryl Jones is a freshman defensive back for Northeastern in Boston. He played at St. John's College High. Northeastern lost 49-14 Sept. 8 to Richmond. Jones had one tackle in the first two games.

Laurel High product Nofiu Lookman is on the football roster for Frostburg.
