SHAFII’S HEADER BEATS
DETROIT AND THE HEAT
Senior Amir Shafii (Woodbridge High) headed in a corner kick from Michael Farfan 1:25 into the match and that proved the day’s only score as the Cal State Fullerton men’s soccer team held on to beat Detroit-Mercy, 1-0, last week.
The win improved Fullerton’s record to 2-0 while the visiting Titans of Detroit-Mercy fell to 0-2.
The 100-plus degree temperature sapped both teams and there were only 12 shots taken in the match, eight by Fullerton.
It was the seventh time in 33 years of Div. I play that Fullerton has opened the season with back-to-back shutouts, most recently in 2003 against Ohio State and Penn State.
Shafii is a fifth-year performer who is a co-captain.
He was a second-team all-Big West Conference selection in 2006 when he was only Titan to start all 19 matches.
Shafii finished third on team in scoring with four goals and three assists.
Shafii appeared in 17 matches in 2005, 12 as a starter.
He was a four-year varsity letterman at Woodbridge High and was a member of national and CIF championship squads there. He scored the tying-goal in the final minute to give Woodbridge a share of a CIF title.
BRITTANY GOETZ STARTING
FOR UC RIVERSIDE
SOCCER TEAM
Former Irvine High standout Brittany Goetz is the starting goalie this season for the UC Riverside women’s soccer team.
UC Riverside improved its record to 2-0 last week with a 3-2 victory over Toledo.
The UCR women’s 2-0 start has happened only twice before as a Division I team. More impressive this season is that both of the wins have come against teams that were participants in the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
Goetz played has played every minute in goal so far for UC Riverside.
She has given up for goals and has seven saves.
She red-shirted last season. Goetz appeared in four games and started one in 2005.
In high school she played four years of varsity soccer at Irvine.
She was a first team all-Sea View League player in 2003 and 2004 and was named third team all-CIF as a junior.
JON FAHEY OFF TO HOT
START WITH CONCORDIA
SOCCER TEAM
Sophomore midfielder Jon Fahey (Woodbridge High) scored a pair of goals and assisted on the eventual gamewinner, leading the ninthranked Concordia men’s soccer team to a 4-0 win over visiting Cal State San Bernardino recently.
Fahey helped set up the team’s first goal of the game.
He took hold of a throw-in deep in the Coyotes’ half and heaved the ball deep into the area. Jeff Clark flicked the ball toward the back post where Josh Bickel headed home his first goal since Nov. 12, 2005 in the NAIA Region II playoffs.
Four minutes later, the Eagles had their second score as Fahey opened his scoring account for the season.
Carlos Suarez picked up the ball near midfield and pressed the ball upfield.
Fahey made a timely diagonal run and Suarez caught him perfectly in stride. Fahey dribbled around Coyote goalie Lucas Pepi and cut the ball into the net to give Concordia a 2-0 lead.
Fahey scored his second goal of the game with just five minutes left.
Jon Carlson made a strong run down the right flank. He cut the ball back inside to Clark, who tapped a clever back heel toward the left post. Fahey continued his run toward goal and pushed across the third Concordia goal.
Fahey had two goals and one assist for five points in the team’s first two games, both victories.
Fahey started both games in midfield. He also had seven shots on goal.
Concordia also features two other players from Irvine, Joel Smith of Northwood and Adrian Martinez of Woodbridge.
Fahey was one of five Eagles named first-team all-Golden State Athletic Conference last season after tallying nine goals and two assists for 20 points. He started all 20 games for the team during freshman campaign and finished second on the team with 49 shots, including 24 of those going on goal.
