COLLEGE LACROSSE: UDM hires U-M's Meltzer as coach
Detroit Mercy has hired Mary Ann Meltzer as coach of its women's lacrosse team, which will begin play in 2008-09, UDM athletic director Keri Gaither announced Monday.
Meltzer comes to the Titans from Michigan, where she was head coach of the Wolverines' club lacrosse team. In five seasons at U-M, she compiled a 93-22 record and was selected national collegiate club coach of the year in 2006 and 2007. Previously, Meltzer coached five seasons at Birmingham Seaholm High, leading the Maples to a 78-23 record and state championships in 1998, 1999 and 2001.
Meltzer played lacrosse at Maryland, where she was an All-America in 1989 and 1990 and national offensive player of the year in 1990.
Field hockey: Michigan State freshman Jantine Steinmetz is Big Ten co-offensive player of the week after scoring four goals and an assist in two victories. The Spartans (6-0) are ranked seventh. ... Massachusetts Institute of Technology senior Lauren McCarthy (Birmingham Detroit Country Day) was named to the all-tournament team for Vassar College's Betty Richey Tournament.
Soccer: Men -- Michigan forward Jake Stacy is Big Ten offensive player of the week. A junior from Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central, he scored two goals and an assist as the Wolverines (4-0) won the Cal State-Fullerton Tournament. Stacy was named all-tournament.
Women -- Adrian swept MIAA player of the week awards. Sophomore forward Lindsay Chitwood (St. Clair Shores Lakeview) scored three goals as the Bulldogs posted a pair of 2-0 victories. Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda House (North Branch) totaled 10 saves in the two shutouts.
Volleyball: Michigan State middle blocker Janilee Rathje is Big Ten defensive player of the week. A freshman from Mt. Pleasant, Rathje tallied 29 blocks in four matches as the Spartans won the Harvard Invitational. ... Oakland University sophomore Adrienne Leone (Clinton Township) is Summit League offensive player of the week. She totaled 41 kills in 11 games as the Golden Grizzlies went 3-0 and won the Oakland Volleyball Tournament.
