FULLERTON -- Assistants Ron Bergeron and Sergio Brown will join Cal State Fullerton coach Dave Serrano's baseball staff, it was announced Monday.
With the team standing behind him, Serrano, who coached UC Irvine to the College World Series this past season, was introduced as the Titans' coach and he, in turn, announced that he was bringing his two assistants with him. Serrano said Bergeron and Brown were both told by Irvine officials that they would not be candidates for the vacant head coaching job.
UC Irvine is expected to do a national search to replace Serrano but must move quickly because practice begins Oct. 4. Interim athletic director Paula Smith was unavailable for comment.
Serrano, who assisted outgoing coach George Horton at Fullerton for eight seasons, said he didn't think there would be much change in the style of baseball that has garnered the Titans four national championships.
"I'm just a 10-year younger version of him (Horton)," Serrano said. "The body's the same, the style is the same."
Serrano said he met with the team over the weekend and didn't expect any players to transfer out of Fullerton.
