NW Briefs | UW women swept in soccer tourney

Purdue upset top-ranked Portland 1-0 behind a goal by Shauna Stapleton to win the Husky/Nike Invitational championship Sunday at Husky Soccer Field.

Host Washington lost 3-1 to Cal State Fullerton, dropping its record to 0-4.

Purdue is the first team from outside the Northwest to win the Invitational title.

Washington and Portland have each won the tournament six times.

Stacey Thompson tallied two goals to lead Fullerton over UW. The Titans got on the board first, when Thompson converted a penalty kick at 38:08. The Huskies got an equalizing penalty kick at 66:40 as Dani Bridges netted the shot after Melissa Beal was fouled in the box.

Washington was swept for just the second time in the 13-year history of the Nike Invitational. The tournament's final standings: No. 1 Purdue; No. 2 Portland; No. 3 Cal State Fullerton; No. 4 Washington.

The Huskies play next weekend at the Portland Invitational in Oregon. UW meets Yale on Friday and Kansas on Sunday.

More women's soccer

• Gonzaga seniors Lauren Zuckerman and Nanda McCormick each scored as the Zags beat Eastern Washington 2-0. The Zags evened their record at 2-2-0 with the victory, and the Eagles dropped to 1-2-0 for the year.

Gonzaga plays Friday at Nashville, Tenn., in the Vanderbilt University Tournament; it faces host Vanderbilt on Friday and University of Alabama-Birmingham on Sunday. Eastern plays at home Friday against Cal State Bakersfield.

• Washington State scored three times in the second half and earned a 3-3 tie with Utah.

Sophomore Kiersten Dallstream capped the scoring with a goal at the 84-minute mark.

WSU will travel to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Inn at St. Mary's Classic. The Cougars play Oklahoma State on Friday.

MEN'S SOCCER

• The Seattle University men's soccer team improved to 5-1 with a 1-0 shutout of Notre Dame de Namur at Championship Field. Seattle battled through a scoreless first half before finally breaking through with a goal in the 62nd minute. Cameron Mertens finished a breakaway on a ball over the top from John Fishbaugher.

RUNNING

• Erika Daligcon and Rose Wetzel claimed 10K and 5K titles, respectively, at the third annual RYKA Iron Girl Seattle 10K and 5K. More than 1,500 women participated in the event at Green Lake Park.
