San Marcos — Texas State opened the CenturyTel Premier in winning fashion, beating Houston 3-1 (30-25, 30-27, 21-30, 30-23), but could not complete the sweep, as Texas State dropped a 3-1 decision to Cal State-Fullerton (24-30, 30-25, 24-30, 28-30) in the day's fourth and final game.

Texas State overcame hitting percentages of .000 in game three and .095 in game four to defeat Houston 3-1 (30-25, 30-27, 21-30, 30-23). Four Bobcats recorded double-digit kill totals, led by Amy Weigle’s 15. Texas State also had five players with at least 10 digs as Kacey Wimpy led the way with 24. Shelbi Irvin, Jessica Weynand and Lawrencia Brown all posted double-doubles. Weynand and Brown’s performances was critical to the victory and a pleasant surprise after both outside hitters struggled earlier this week against Texas A&M.

“This week we did a lot of training with them,” Texas State head coach Karen Chisum said. “We broke it down and focused on improving them, and they wanted to do the work because that’s not the performance they wanted.”

Weynand had 11 kills while Brown finished with 10.

Houston’s Justine Farmer led the Cougars with 20 kills and added 18 digs. Up 2-0 at the break between games two and three, Texas State came out flat in game three but rebounded to build a 22-9 lead in game four, cruising to the 30-23 win to take the match.

Wimpy took a hard hit ball to the face late in game four, but the sophomore barely seemed rattled.

“She just went ‘ouch,’” Chisum said. “She couldn’t see anything after getting hit, but she held in there. That one stung, she’s got some ice on it.”

In the day’s closest match, Texas State and Cal State-Fullerton battled through all four games, but Texas State could not overcome the Titans in games three and four, losing 3-1 (24-30, 30-25, 24-30, 28-30).

Weynand and Brown recorded double-doubles for the second straight match, with Weynand leading the Bobcats in kills with 16.

Brittany Collins also recorded a double-double, tallying 30 assists and 11 digs. In game three, Cal State-Fullerton used a 7-2 run to gain separation, holding on for the 30-24 win. Game four featured both teams trading points for virtually the entire game, as the largest lead for either side was a 22-19 advantage for the Titans. Texas State rallied to tie it at 24-24, and the teams would trade points again until the Titans gained the advantage, winning on a Bobcat service error to take the match.
