CSU announces launch of new doctorates

SACRAMENTO—Officials with the California State University system say they're launching doctoral degree programs in education at seven campuses this fall.

They say this is the first time the system has offered the advanced degrees.

Legislation sponsored by State Sen. Jack Scott, Democrat from Altadena, made the new programs possible.

Before this, the University of California's 10 campuses were the only public universities in the state allowed to grant doctorates. The CSU schools could only grant joint doctorates in partnership with UC and private universities.

The seven CSU campuses launching education doctorates are Fresno State, CSU Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach, Sacramento State, CSU San Bernardino, San Diego State and San Francisco State. Four other campuses will offer programs next year.
