The News-Review names new assistant city editor
Veteran journalist Mark Adams has been named assistant city editor of The News-Review, completing recent newsroom changes prompted by the departure of Editor Bart Smith, now publisher of the Greeley Tribune in Colorado.
Adams will back up new City Editor Christian Bringhurst and Editor Vicki Menard, who took over Smith's post running the newsroom.
Adams, 49, joined The News-Review over the summer as a copy editor and page designer. He has 25 years of experience in the newspaper business, working as a reporter and copy editor in Hawaii and Los Angeles before moving to Oregon two years ago.
A 1982 graduate of California State University, Fullerton, the newsman worked for seven years as a reporter for the San Gabriel Valley Tribune in West Covina, Calif., where he covered several city councils and school boards, the court system and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
He moved to Hawaii in 1989, working as a reporter and copy editor at The Maui News, where he covered the Hawaii State Legislature, the governor's office, the Maui County Council and the court system.
In Roseburg, Adams has worked as a freelance writer with bbg Marketing, ImageStream Productions and The News-Review.
Adams has been a frequent visitor to the Roseburg area over the years. His sister, Yvonne O'Neil, teaches reading at Winchester Elementary School and has lived here with her husband Dan and family since the 1980s.
The new assistant city editor lives in Roseburg and has three children. His son, Travis, 17, is now a senior at Roseburg High School. His daughter Nina, 16, attends Thurston High School in Springfield. His oldest daughter, Robin Ferguson, 27, is a mechanical engineer in Denver, Colo.
