Broncos' Schumm leads way

Adrienne Schumm, a senior from Chino Hills, and Claudia Garcia posted a pair of top-20 finishes to lead the Cal Poly Pomona women's cross country team in its season opener in a Cal State Fullerton race held at Brea's Carbon Canyon Park on Saturday.
Schumm cruised the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 4seconds to finish 17th. Garcia was three places behind Schumm in 20th (19:07).
The Broncos finished eighth in the 12-team event with 275 points. The host Titans won the competition with 51 points.
CAL POLY VOLLEYBALL
The Broncos finished play Saturday at the Western Washington Invitational with a pair of wins over St. Martin's and Seattle University.
Junior Vanessa Williams played an impressive match against Saint Martin's with a lofty .714 hitting percentage (10 kills, 0errors, 14 attacks) to lead the Broncos to a 3-0 sweep (30-13, 30-13, 30-25).
Teammates Antoinette Kathol contributed 10 kills and Anne-Marie Hofmans had 11 kills as the Broncos cruised to the victory.
Senior Brittany Harkey and Williams each had five block assists.
The Broncos went on to earn their second victory of the day with another 3-0 victory, this time against Seattle University by scores of 30-21, 30-23 and 30-26.
Williams and Jenna Young led the Broncos with 11 kills apiece.
