UCR Roundup: Highlander women strike quickly in soccer opener

The UC Riverside women's soccer team scored three second-half goals in a span of two minutes to lead the Highlanders to a season-opening victory over Florida Atlantic, 3-2, Friday in the San Diego State Tournament.
With the Highlanders down 2-0, Natalie Ducatenzeiler cut the lead to one in the 85th minute. Pat Brady tied the game 28 seconds later and Candis Novis put the Highlanders up for good in the 87th minute.
Women's Volleyball
UCR loses two - - The Highlanders lost their first two matches of the season at the University of Northern Colorado Tournament. The Highlanders (0-2) fell to the University of Iowa, 26-30, 30-20, 30-28, 30-24, and to the tournament host, 30-28, 30-25, 30-27.
Baseball
Assistant may leave - - UCR pitching coach Andrew Checketts will travel Eugene, Ore., this weekend to interview for a similar position with the Ducks.
Oregon is reviving its baseball program after a 26-year hiatus and is expected to appoint Cal State Fullerton's George Horton as head coach. UCR coach Doug Smith said Horton sought permission to talk to Checketts, who has helped develop the Highlanders' pitching staff into one of the nation's best.
