East Valley briefs: Coyotes’ Turris leads Team Canada

Forward Kyle Turris, the Phoenix Coyotes’ No. 1 pick this year, scored on a penalty shot for Team Canada in a 4-2 win over Russia in the opening game of the Super Series on Monday at Ufa, Russia.
The eight-game Super Series, which commemorates the 1972 Summit Series, features the top junior players in Canada taking on Russia’s best juniors.
TRACK AND FIELD
Sarah Stevens and Aaron Aguayo, who competed with the Arizona State program during the 2007 season, competed for the United States at the 11th IAAF World Championships in Athletics held at Nagai Stadium in Osaka, Japan.
Stevens, the 2007 NCAA indoor shot put champion and a junior with the Sun Devil program, recorded a mark of 16.87 meters on her first throw and finished 22nd.
Aguayo, a four-time Pac-10 steeplechase champion and All-American, clocked a time of 8:30.86 and placed 20th overall.
• Kenny McDaniel has been hired by Arizona State to coach its women’s sprints, hurdles and relays. McDaniel, who replaces Dion Miller after he took a similar position at Texas Tech, comes to Tempe after working with the men’s and women’s sprints, hurdles and relays at Cal State Fullerton over the past three seasons.
