JAVENS RECEIVES AWARD
The MERIT Companies, the professional community association management company, announced that Town Manager Dennis Javens received a Vision Award from the California Association of Community Managers. The awards were presented on July 26 at the Annual Vision Awards ceremony honoring industry professionals throughout the state of California. Javens received a Leadership Vision Award for communications management.
NEW BOARD MEMBER
David L. De Filippo was selected to the Cal State Fullerton Alumni Association Board of Directors for 2007-08. De Filippo is a regional vice president, Southern California business banking, Union Bank of California. The CSUF Alumni Association represents more than 180,000 CSUF graduates, encouraging alumni pride in association with the university and developing alumni interest, involvement and support.
TOWN CONCERTS

GRAND PRIX AND 5K
Pre-race registration is still being accepted for the Ladera Ranch Grand Prix and Fun 5K, the community's first cycle and 5K race, taking place at 7:45 a.m. on Sunday at Founders Park. Pre-race registration for the 5K is $25 and $10 for the 1K run for children, 5-12. Proceeds benefit Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
San Juan Hills High needs need approximately 30 adult volunteers to assist with registration on Monday and Tuesday and Aug. 28. TESORO REGISTRATION
Registration for the fall semester at Tesoro High will take place from 8 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Freshman orientation will be 9 a.m.-noon on Aug. 31. Information: 949-234-5310.
GUITAR LESSONS
Ron Gorman is offering guitar lessons from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday until Aug. 28 at the Flintridge Clubhouse, 28112 Roanoke, Ladera Ranch. Gorman will teach chords, strums and songs to help students play at a consistent level. Cost for the four-week course is $85. Information: 949-362-0778.
GOLF TRYOUTS
Coach Cary Baker announced tryouts for the San Juan Hills High Girls' Golf Team will take place at 9 a.m. on Wednesday. Girls should report to the Golf Range at the San Juan Hills Golf Course on San Juan Creek Road in San Juan Capistrano and bring $5 to pay for a bucket of golf balls. WATER WORKSHOPS
The Santa Margarita Water District is continuing a series of Home Gardeners Water Conservation Workshops from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Aug. 25 and Sept. 22, at the district office, 26111 Antonio Parkway.
The workshop on Saturday, Aug. 25, will focus on evaluating water consumption for single-family homes. The workshop on Saturday, Sept. 22 will concentrate on landscape plants.

CANDIDATES NIGHT
A "Meet the Candidates" Night is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Aug. 23 at the Covenant Hills Clubhouse, 1 Covenant Hills Drive. The event will give Ladera Ranch residents a chance to meet homeowners interested in serving as a board member to the Ladera Ranch Community Services (LARCS). LIBRARY STORY TIME
Sign-ups are being accepted for the Ladera Ranch Library summer story times for children 2 to 4. Story times will be held from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. on Wednesdays through Aug. 29 in the library, 29551 Sienna Parkway. Admission is free, but parents must register their children in advance. TENNIS TOURNAMENT
The Ladera Ranch Tennis Club is hosting The Five-Year Reunion Resident and Guest Tournament Aug. 25-26 at the tennis courts at Covenant Hills, Avendale and Flintridge clubhouses. MOTTO CONTEST
The Ladera Ranch Flag Football League is having a contest to find a motto. The league, entering its second season, is taking submissions from children ages 7-14. The winning motto will be used on the league's merchandising and the winner will receive a $100 gift card to Chick's Sporting Goods. The contest will run through Sept. 4, which coincides with the start of league practices. Entries can be emailed to info@laderafootball.org.
GYMNASTICS OFFERED
Creative Gymnastics is offering children's classes at 4:30 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Covenant Hills Clubhouse, 1 Covenant Hills Drive, and Thursdays at the Avendale Clubhouse, 1 Daisy Street. The eight-week, 35-minute class is offered twice a week and will cover the four disciplines of gymnastics. Cost is $95. Information: 949-351-1041.
