BRIEFLY

Church leaders blog to prepare for services

Jim Ries and Juan Navarros, priests at St. Mary’s Church in Fullerton, have started a blog to help parishioners begin thinking about the scriptures before they come to Mass on Sundays. Within the blog are links to readings in English and Spanish. “We each write a short reflection to start the thinking process,” Ries said.

“We try to have the reflection up by Tuesday morning.” To visit the blog, log on to http://saintmarysfullertonblog.blogspot.com/

Local man succeeds in Coast Guard

Coast Guard Seaman Alex Duarte, son of Irma and Armando Duarte of Fullerton, recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J.

During his eight-week training program, Duarte completed training in academics, water safety instruction and survival, military customs, seamanship skills, first aid, firefighting and marksmanship.

Duarte, a 2002 graduate of Fullerton Union High School, also learned the Coast Guard’s core values. He will join 36,000 other men and women in the Coast Guard.

Archeologist discusses mystery writing

Aileen Barron, who holds a doctorate in anthropology and archaeology, will discuss “Digging Up the Dirt: The Secrets of Archaeological Mysteries” at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Main Library.
