Classes start Monday for local colleges
Total projected enrollment for both campuses set at 53,000.

FULLERTON - Motorists can expect clogged streets Monday when fall semester classes begin at Fullerton College and Cal State Fullerton.

Officially, some CSF sessions will start Saturday, but the majority of students will arrive on Monday morning.

Nearly 34,000 students are expected on the Nutwood Avenue campus the first week, but that number will grow, according to spokeswoman Paula Selleck. In fall 2006, 35,921 students enrolled – 900 more than in the previous year.

At Fullerton College, the projected enrollment is 19,012 – a slight increase over 2006, spokeswoman Andrea Hanstein said.

Meanwhile, students in the Fullerton School District and Fullerton Joint Union High School District return to their campuses on Aug. 30.

Christine Zubko, dean of attendance at Troy High School, is one of 19 educators selected for CSF's new doctorate in education program. The university is among the first campuses in the Cal State University system to offer a doctorate in educational leadership.

Among other new CSF activities, a $696,735 National Aeronautics and Space Administration grant is building and equipping a remote sensing laboratory; a master's degree program in social work is being introduced; and a new high-tech skills lab has been built containing an estimated $250,000 worth of computer programs for nursing students to practice skills in a simulated patient-care environment.

At Fullerton College, construction is nearly complete on the College Center that fronts Chapman Avenue. The building will house the Associated Students, transfer and international student offices. In addition, all campus dining facilities will transfer to the Spanish-style building.

Hanstein said a grand opening for the public is planned for the first part of December. The facility should open to students in mid-October.

Construction crews continue their work on the humanities classroom/office building in mid-campus. The opening is set for January 2008.
