It may not be Kansas but it is the Fox


“The Wizard of Oz” will dance across the back wall of the Fox Fullerton Theatre tonight at 8 p.m. as part of the continuing “Movies on the Fox” series. A technical marvel of its time, the opening Kansas sequence was filmed in sepia to provide greater contrast to the Technicolor splendor of Oz. The move is free.

Participants are invited to bring chairs or blankets to the parking lot behind the Fox, located on the corner of Chapman Avenue and Harbor Boulevard. Information: 714-870-0069.


Have a night out with the police

Fullerton police are inviting the public to attend “National Night Out,” a nationwide crime prevention program, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Target Store, 200 W. Orangethorpe Ave. Demonstrations will be staged by the SWAT and K-9 units, and by the Fullerton Fire Department. Games for the children, entertainment, prizes and refreshments will also be offered.

Oil recycling program offered Saturday


A used oil and oil filter collection, sponsored by the city, takes place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Kragen Auto Parts, 904 W. Orangethorpe Ave.


Every resident who brings in a used oil filter for recycling will receive a new oil filter free.


Used oil must be in a clean, uncontaminated container.


Any contaminated used oil and other household hazardous waste must be disposed at the county’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center, 1071 N. Blue Gum St., Anaheim.

Public input sought on General Plan update


The final two of six public workshops to gather public input for the city’s General Plan Update will be held Aug. 6 and 14 in the north side of the city.


Residents are invited to gather on Aug. 6 at the Fullerton Tennis Center, 110 E. Valencia Mesa Drive, and on Aug. 14 at the Fullerton Golf Course, 2700 N. Harbor Blvd. Both sessions run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.


The meetings will focus on community values, priorities and visions for Fullerton’s future.


Residents added to city advisory boards


Seven candidates for city commissions and committees were approved at the July 17 City Council meeting.
Those accepting new posts are: Richard Wilson and Arlan Park, Citizens’ Infrastructure Review Committee; Eugene Brassett, Energy and Resource Management Committee; and Steve Lynch,

Redevelopment Design Review Committee.

OLLI group holds open house


Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (formerly CLE) at Cal State Fullerton will hold a free open house at 9 a.m. on Aug. 11 in the Ruby Gerontology Center, 800 N. State College Blvd. Festivities will include refreshments, a tour of the center and information about OLLI’s programs. The institute is a self-governing organization of older adults that offers classes, lectures, workshops and discussion groups on a wide variety of topics from current events to health issues to classes in French and Spanish. The annual fee is $215.

Take a hike on Aug. 12


Friends of Coyote Hills will host the next nature hike at 5 p.m. on Aug. 12, starting at the equestrian gate at Laguna Lake Park at Lakeview Drive, east of Euclid Street. Participants are asked to bring water to drink and wear comfortable shoes. The walk is open to the public.


Life lesson part of doggie program


Teaching children responsible pet care is part of the Hunt Branch Library’s mission during the “Reading to Fido” program set for 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Children in first through fifth grades are invited to attend the free session at 201 S. Basque Ave. Representatives of Orange County Animal Care Services will bring dogs along to help get the message across. Participants will also get a chance to read to the dogs.
