Quirk to take residents on walking tours

Mayor Pro Tem Sharon Quirk will conduct a “Walk and Talk” tour of Fullerton on the first Saturday of every month, beginning Aug. 4.

Each segment will begin at 8 a.m. in a different section of the city. The first walk is set for the Downtown Plaza on Wilshire Avenue, east of Harbor Boulevard, adjacent to the Fullerton Museum Center.

Quirk said all residents are invited to join, but they have to be prepared to walk. Participants may ask questions about city activities and projects, as well as talk about matters of concern to them.

She said the walks will offer chances to learn about many unique neighborhoods that make up the city.

No appointments are necessary. Information: 714-738-6311.

CSUF prof honored for faculty leadership

Cal State Fullerton sociology professor John Bedell, who chairs the Anthropology Department, is this year’s recipient of the university’s Faculty Leadership in Collegial Governance Award.

A CSF faculty member for 38 years, Bedell is the first person in the university’s history to serve five terms as leader of the faculty advisory body, the Academic Senate.

The award recognizes faculty who have made significant contributions to collegial governance and the mission of the CSU. During his years at CSF, he served several terms as chair of the departments of Sociology, Child Development, Electrical Engineering and Anthropology. He was also director of the Faculty Development Center and acting vice president for academic affairs.

Simple permits now available online

Online permits are now available for small home improvement projects including water heater installations and re-roofing.

Residents and contractors can access the permits by logging on to the city’s Web site at www.ci.fullerton.ca.us, scroll to the Community Development section under “Departments” and click on “Building and Permits.”

The goal is to free residents from having to take time from their schedules to drive to City Hall and wait in line, city building official Hadi Tabatabaee-Pour said.

Within the coming weeks, the division will add air-conditioning change-out and electrical meter upgrade permits to the on-line system. An on-line appointment system is also in place.
