North County business briefs: Rady School receives $5M gift

SAN DIEGO ---- The Rady School of Management at UC San Diego received a $5 million gift from a Rancho Santa Fe couple, university officials announced Wednesday.

A portion of the money will go to an endowment fund that provides financial help for Rady School MBA students, according to UCSD.

"We are thankful for the support of Tanya and Charles Brandes and their foundation, because this gift will open doors to graduate management education for talented students," UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox said.

Tanya Brandes is a doctor who is involved in charitable medical services in New Guinea, Africa and other developing nations. Charles Brandes founded San Diego-based Brandes Investment Partners in 1974.

Ground to be broken on Summit

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- Developer Jay Paul Co. plans to break ground on Wednesday at The Summit Rancho Bernardo, a 105-acre mixed-use development that will include 11 office towers and two amenities buildings.

Avo committee seeks applicants

SACRAMENTO ---- The California Department of Food and Agriculture's Avocado Inspection Program has announced an alternate handler vacancy on the California Avocado Inspection Committee. The term of the office is two years.

Cymer makes pact with company

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- Cymer Inc., a Rancho Bernardo-based company that makes ultraviolet light sources used in semiconductor manufacturing, has reached an agreement to ship its new XLR 500i light source to lithography system provider ASML in the current quarter.

The XLR 500i will be incorporated into ASML's argon fluoride systems over time.

VegaStream chooses Express Logic product

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- Express Logic Inc., a Rancho Bernardo-based company that provides software solutions, says that VegaStream Group Ltd. of Bracknell, Berkshire, U.K., has selected Express Logic's ThreadX RTOS for use in its new family of VoIP Gateways.

A VoIP Gateway is a network device that converts voice and fax calls, in real time, between the Internet Protocol network and the public switched telephone network.

Javo brews deal with 7-Eleven

VISTA ---- Javo Beverage Co. Inc., based in Vista, says that 7-Eleven Inc. has signed a three-year agreement with Javo to supply coffee beverages that can be served over ice.

Outdoor Channel selects a provider

TEMECULA ---- Outdoor Channel, based in Temecula, announced that TVN Entertainment, a TV on-demand company, will be its exclusive provider for encoding, asset management and distribution for the entire Outdoor Channel On-Demand offering.

South Pacific picks Lender E-source product

VISTA ---- Lender E-Source, a Vista-based company that provides loan guidelines and automated loan pricing to mortgage professionals, announced that South Pacific Financial Corp. has implemented Lender E-Source's Loan Library and Electronic Loan Finder to improve loan product searches for loan officers through a database.

Islands partners with foundation

CARLSBAD ---- Islands Restaurants has formed a partnership with the Surfrider Foundation. The organizations celebrated International Surfing Day on June 21 to commemorate surfing around the world and raise awareness about caring for the oceans and beaches. That event also marked the beginning of the restaurant chain's 25th anniversary celebration.

NTN Buzztime offers resource, plans tourney

CARLSBAD ---- NTN Buzztime Inc., a developer and distributor of Play Along TV entertainment and technology, has launched My.buzztime.com, a resource site for Buzztime service subscribers. The Buzztime network consists of nearly 4,000 bars and restaurants across North America and the U.K. and features trivia, sports, casual and casino games played on TVs within each location.

The company also recently announced the details of its 2007-08 QB1 Tournament of Champions.

The tournament championship event will be held the weekend of Jan. 18 in Las Vegas in conjunction with the AFC and NFC conference championship games. QB1 tournament winners will win more than $15,000 in cash and prizes, with the overall champion receiving $10,000 cash.

CARLSBAD ---- Action sports brand company Reef has launched a companywide humanitarian and environmental initiative called Reef Redemption. The company plans to contribute 1 percent of the product series sales to environmental and humanitarian efforts worldwide.
