Republicans award scholarship

The Lompoc Valley Republican Club held its the annual Summer Picnic at Ken Adam Park on Sunday, July 15.

Sheriff Bill Brown was the guest speaker for a crowd of enthusiastic Republicans.

Every year the club awards a scholarship to a deserving student at the picnic. This year the $700 scholarship was awarded to Arianna Zanesco, a Cabrillo High School graduate, for her academic achievements and her winning essay an the subject of “What I Would Do as President of the United States.”

In the fall, Zanesco will be a student at California State University, Fullerton, majoring in business administration.

Vandenberg Village Lions Club - Bill Cady, past district governor, was the installing officer for the Santa Maria Noontimers Lions Club and the Orcutt Lions Club at recent installation events.

The Vandenberg Village Lions Club also supported the Santa Maria Noontimers by working at the club's fireworks booth in Santa Maria on the Fourth of July.

Lauryn Janecek, one of the VV Lions Club scholarship winners, was presented with her check at a recent noon meeting of the club.

Cara Bean, the other scholarship winner, will be present at the July 26 noon meeting at the Village Coffee Stop.

Anyone wishing information about or how to make a contribution to the Scholarship Fund, which benefits Cabrillo High School graduates, may do so by contacting club Secretary Bill Cady at 733-2484.

Vandenberg Village Rotary Club - This Friday's speaker will be Shannon Rose Chavez of the North County Rape Crisis and Child Protection Center.

The center is in the process of purchasing a new building at 505 E. Ocean Ave., and the Rotary Club has budgeted $500 to contribute to the capital campaign. The club is also seeking a matching grant from the local Rotary district to make the total contributed $1,000.

It is not too late to sign up for the R.I. District 5240 Conference, which will be held Oct. 5 through 7 in Bakersfield. Register in July and save $20. Register in August and save $10, or register in September for full price.

Sign-ups are still being accepted for the ChildSpree event at Mervyns on Aug. 11.
