Botox and global warming talks highlight week ahead in science

July 23-25: The UCI Center for Cosmology will host the "Science in the Era of the Thirty Meter Telescope," Beckman Center, Irvine. The event is closed to the public.

July 23: UC Irvine Chancellor Michael Drake is in China, where he'll visit the Tan Jin Medical School to discuss science issues with Xishan Hao, a renowned oncologist.

July 24: The History Channel will broadcast "Megafreeze," a look at whether North America and much of Europe is headed toward a climatic "big chill," starting at 8 p.m.

July 24: Veterinarian Lauren Palmer will discuss "Fifteen Years of Rehab: Marine Mammal Care Center of Fort McArthur, Plus Domoic Acid in Sea Lions," 1:15 p.m., Ruby Gerontology Center, Cal State Fullerton.

July 25: Lynn Salo, a vice president at Allergan Neurosciences, will discuss "From Botox to Baby Boomers," noon, Irvine Hyatt Regency, Irvine.

July 25: UCI Chancellor Drake, continuing his China trip, will meet with Jianhua Lin, a chemist at Peking University, and Weigang Fang, vice president of the university's Health Science Center/

July 26: Geoscientist Matt Kirby will discuss "Global Warming: The Facts," 1:15 p.m., Ruby Gerontology Center, Cal State Fullerton.

July 27: Space shuttle astronaut Gene Trinh will talk to the public at the Orange County Fair from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Go to the Boy Scout OC booth.

July 27-29: The Society for Chaos Theory in Philosophy and Life Science will meet at Chapman University, Orange, to discuss "chaos theory, fractals, complex systems, catastrophes and related topics."

July 27: Sky and Telescope says that Jupiter's moon Io will move out of the planet's shadow and become visible along the eastern limb of Jupiter at 8:31 p.m. PDT.
