Dr. Donald Bauman, 88, dies
Ohio native was the first pediatrician in north Orange County.

Memorial services will be in August for Dr. Donald Bauman, recognized as the first pediatrician in North Orange County, who died Monday morning of cardiac failure at his Fullerton home.

Born on March 24, 1919 in Cleveland, Ohio, he attended Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio, and Case Western Reserve Medical College in Cleveland.

He practiced medicine for 37 years.

Bauman and his late wife, Evelyn, traveled to California in 1949.

According to the family, when they arrived in Fullerton, the smell of orange blossoms influenced their decision to stay.
The story goes Bauman went into the town drugstore and asked if there was a pediatrician in town. When the clerk answered, “No,” Bauman decided to stay.

Through the years, the doctor was involved in numerous community projects.

He helped sponsor the Youth Science Center, founded the Fullerton Gassers Jazz Band, served as a nature guide at the Fullerton Arboretum, donated one of his sculptures to the library and was a medic on the Mammoth Lakes Volunteer Ski Patrol.

Survivors include his daughter, Sally Trost of Redlands; son, Fred of Berkeley; three grandchildren; sister, Doris Taylor of Fullerton; and companion, Diane Nielen of Fullerton.

A memorial service for Dr. Bauman will be held at 4 p.m. on Aug. 5 at the Fullerton Arboretum, 1900 Associated Road. Contributions in his memory may be sent to the Nature Conservancy, 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, Va.
