STUDENTS IN THE NEWS

Amy Barlow Klenk, a 2003 graduate of Northwood High School, received her bachelor’s degree in economics and German on May 20 from the University of Notre Dame. She has accepted a job as a portfolio analyst with Liberty Mutual Insurance in Portsmouth, N.H. Her parents are Steve and Anne Klenk.


MacKenzie C.N.D. Edwards, daughter of Lawrance and Carla-Dawn Edwards, and a junior at Irvine High, was selected to participate in the Resident Honors Program at the University of Southern California. Edwards is one of 27 students selected nationwide to participate this fall in the early entrance honors program.


Irvine Unified GATE Community Advisory Committee recently awarded the Carol Smith Memorial Scholarship to Christina Zhu, a senior at University High School.


Zhu is the first winner of this scholarship developed in honor of Carol Smith, a GATE and APAAS teacher who died in the summer of 2006. To donate to the Carol Smith Scholarship fund, contact Larry Kaplan at lmkaplan@cox.net.


Nine seniors from St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, including one from Irvine, have signed on to play collegiate sports next year. Sylvia Zaich will be swimming at Northwestern University. St. Margaret’s is an independent, coeducational day school serving students in San Juan Capistrano.


Sara Rogers, a 2003 graduate at Irvine High School, graduated with honors May 20 from Cal State Fullerton’s College of Humanites and Social Sciences with a bachelor’s degree in American studies. Rogers will continue at Cal State Fullerton in the graduate program.


Vanessa Mizell, a 2003 graduate of Irvine High, graduated recently from Howard University in Washington, D.C., with a bachelor’s degree in journalism with a specialization in broadcast journalism, and a minor in political science. Her parents are Karen and William Mizell.


Jeffrey T. Lawrence, a graduate of University High School, graduated recently from Amherst College in Massachusetts with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish. He was one of 409 seniors who received degrees at Amherst. He is the son of Peter and Karen Lawrence.
