Favorites flop in NCAA

From Scott Kendrick

It was an upset-filled regional round in Division I college baseball, as just three of the top eight national seeds survived the first weekend. One of the victims was No. 1 Vanderbilt, which was knocked out by Michigan.

Also gone are No. 4 Texas (knocked out by UC-Irvine), No. 6 Florida State (ousted by Mississippi State), No. 7 Arkansas (ousted by Oklahoma State) and No. 8 San Diego (knocked out by Cal State Fullerton).

The 16 remaining teams resume their quest for Omaha and the double-elimination College World Series this weekend.

The best-of-three series beginning Friday:

Texas A&M (48-17) at No. 2 Rice (52-12)
Oklahoma State (41-19) at Louisville (44-21)
Clemson (41-21) at Mississippi State (36-20)
South Carolina (45-18) at No. 3 North Carolina (51-12)
Series that begin Saturday:
Michigan (42-17) at Oregon State (42-18)
UCLA (33-26) at Cal State Fullerton (36-23)
Ole Miss (40-23) at No. 5 Arizona State (46-13)
UC Irvine (43-15-1) at Wichita State (53-20)
