Helene Setjo-Heijblom will present "A Child POW During World War II." Setjo-Heijblom is the author of "Of Wars and Morning Glories," the story of her years as a prisoner of war in the Dutch East Indies.

'Rediscover Escondido' on walking tour
ESCONDIDO -- Take a walk and learn about Escondido's past during a free "Rediscovering Escondido" walking tour at 6 p.m. June 12.
The 90-minute tour will start at the southeast corner of Broadway and Grand Avenue and includes stories along "High School Hill." A steep two-block section about halfway through the tour may be a challenge for some, but rewards those who complete it with a terrific view of the surrounding hills.

Art demo planned for June 13

Senior Anglers to meet June 15

Author Franz Wisner to speak at library
ESCONDIDO -- Franz Wisner, author of "Honeymoon With My Brother," and his brother, photographer Kurt Wisner, will appear at the Escondido Public Library at 3 p.m. June 16. Franz Wisner's memoir tells the story of how he turned his life around after he was left at the altar. He and his brother grew closer together and reinvented themselves as vagabonds traveling abroad.

Event to celebrate release of anthology
ESCONDIDO -- A publishing party and poetry reading will be held to celebrate the Philosophical Library's publication of "Paths/Notes From the Journey" from 1 to 3 p.m. June 20 at the library, 2091 E. Valley Parkway.
The publication, featuring contributions by local authors, is an anthology of poetry, prose and visual art representing different perspectives of the spiritual path.

Summer day camps set at San Diego Zoo
SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Zoo will offer summer day camps for students in grades kindergarten through seven starting July 9. Two different topics are offered for each grade level. The five-day programs include animal encounters, crafts, drawing, cooking, music and more.
Day camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. Cost is $204 and $189 for members, with an extended-day option (7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) for $279 and $264 for members.

College workshop to explore anger

Palomar College Television wins awards
SAN MARCOS -- For the second consecutive year, Palomar College Television has won awards in three distinguished competitions -- the international Aurora Awards and Telly Awards and the national AEGIS Awards.
The PCTV produced documentary "From War to Peace and Beyond" won Platinum Best of Show in the Aurora Awards and a Silver Award (top prize) in the Telly Awards and was a winner in the AEGIS competition.
"Contemporary Legal Issues: The Terri Schiavo Case" also won Platinum Best of Show in the Aurora Awards, and "Contemporary Legal Issues: Identity Theft" was a winner in the AEGIS Awards.
Winning a Gold Award in the Aurora Competition was "The College Mathline." The show "Kodaly: Stepping Stones to Teaching Music" was a finalist in the AEGIS Awards and won a Bronze Award in the Telly Award competition.

Local NARFE members attend convention
OCEANSIDE -- Josephine Murphy, Thomas Buggie, Ann Bernal and Patricia Kyger of Oceanside recently joined more than 300 other members of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association for the group's First Biennial California Federation Convention, held in Costa Mesa.
The convention was an opportunity for NARFE activists and leaders from across the state to gain insight from public policy experts and to have a dialogue with NARFE leaders about preserving the earned economic and health security of federal annuitants and workers.
While at the convention, delegates heard from Margaret Baptiste, their national president, who delivered the keynote address about how NARFE is working for members and all federal employees, annuitants and survivors. Judy Park, the group's national legislative director, addressed the group on the day-to-day operation of the legislative staff in communicating with Congress. California Federation of Chapters President Helen Zajac gave a rousing speech on efforts by California NARFE members in leading the grassroots lobbying effort.

Sundowner going to the dogs
OCEANSIDE -- A Sundowner planned for June 14 will be going to the dogs when the North County Humane Society/SPCA hosts the event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the society's off-leash dog park, 2905 San Luis Rey Road. The event will give human visitors a chance to network, chat, visit, eat and drink while their canine companions also have a good time.
Attendees must follow all park rules. Use of the park is at the public's own risk. All dogs must be supervised at all times and under direct voice control; all dogs must have a collar (no pinch or choke) with a current license tag; dogs must be leashed and removed if signs of aggression occur; dogs in the park cannot have contagious conditions; dogs must be spayed or neutered, be at least 12 weeks old and current on all vaccines; and each person using the park is limited to a maximum of three dogs. People entering the park with a dog must be 18 or older, and no children younger than six are admitted.
Car wash benefits Camp Gilead
OCEANSIDE -- Alternative Community Services and Building Bridges: One Child At A Time will hold the car wash fundraiser for Camp Gilead on June 16 at Saturn of West 78, 2205 Vista Way. Alternative Community Services has launched its new program, "Building Bridges: One Child at a Time," which helps children infected and affected by the HIV and AIDS.
The program utilizes a holistic, non-medical approach to healing the mind, body and soul. ACS is coordinating a summer camp for children with or directly affected by HIV and AIDS. Seniors to visit the Grand Canyon
OCEANSIDE -- The Oceanside Senior Center's Happy Wanderers will visit the Grand Canyon from Sept. 4 through 7. Travelers will depart at 7:15 a.m. from Park & Ride lot, corner of Maxson and Barnes. They will explore the Grand Canyon Caverns and ride the Grand Canyon Railroad from Williams up to the famous Grand Canyon for a three-hour tour with lunch. The trip also includes admission to the Grand Canyon IMAX theater, a visit to the Railroad Museum at the Depot, gaming in Laughlin, three breakfasts, one lunch and one dinner, and round-trip deluxe motor coach transportation, including movies. Baggage handling and driver gratuities will be included. Cost is $400 double occupancy and $507 single occupancy. The reservation deadline is June 28. Friends of Vista Library plan concert
The Friends of the Vista Library are selling tickets for the June 17 Mainly Mozart concert at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Food drive continues
VISTA -- A food drive coordinated by Dr. Ginger Hansen for the North County Food Bank will continue through June 7. Canned meats, soup, canned vegetables, canned fruit, flour, coffee, rice, macaroni and cheese, cereal, dry milk, rice, pinto beans, diapers, soap and toiletries are some of the nonperishable items needed. Wine, food fest set for July 14

Book signing set at book tour
FALLBROOK -- Award-winning garden and design writer and North County resident Debra Lee Baldwin will sign her book "Designing with Succulents" from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 9 at the Anderson/Olson Garden, one of the eight gardens featured on the third annual Fallbrook Garden Club tour.
"Designing with Succulents' includes more than 50 of the best succulents for residential landscapes, drought-tolerant companion plants, hundreds of photos of private and public gardens and ideas for container plants.

Fallbrook Art Association to meet
FALLBROOK -- Karen Langer Baker will be the featured demonstrator for the Fallbrook Art Association's last meeting of its fiscal year at 7 p.m. June 11 at the Hilltop Center, 331 E. Elder St. She will demonstrate the techniques for creating monotypes with water-based paints.
The public is invited to attend at no charge. She will conduct a critique session from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring one or two "almost-but-not-quite-finished" works to the "Critique 'n Eat" session. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.
In addition to the demonstration, Langer Baker will conduct an all-day workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 16 at the Fallbrook Art Campus School of Art at 310 E. Langer Baker's professional art training began at age eight with her first of many scholarships to the Art Institute of Chicago, and it continued through high school and college. She majored in art and graduated with honors, earning a bachelor of science Degree in Design from the University of Michigan. She taught art grades one through 12 along with other teaching positions in public and private schools in Illinois and California for 10 years, earning her master's degree in special education along the way.
She continued to study with various masters at such venerable institutions as the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and Evanston Art School in Illinois, the Laguna College of Art and CSU Fullerton, and as a full-time student for two years at the Otis College of Art in Los Angeles, before moving to Oceanside and continuing with classes at the Oceanside Museum's School of Art. While there, she was juried in as a member of the Brandon Gallery in Fallbrook, where new works are featured each month. She and her husband have since become residents of Fallbrook, and she is currently serving on the board of directors of the Fallbrook Art Association and as the 2004, 2006 and 2007 Director of Brandon Gallery.
Fallbrook resident honored at awards dinner
FALLBROOK -- Fallbrook resident Dale Stewart received the Pamela R. Kelly Volunteer of the Year Award at the recent Spirit of Courage Banquet hosted by San Diego Fire Fighters Local 145 at the Hyatt Regency in La Jolla.
The award was established in 1994 in recognition of Kelly, a fire prevention officer, widely known for her volunteer efforts throughout San Diego County. Captain Dale Stewart is from the Oceanside Fire Department, and for nearly two decades, has served as a Burn Institute volunteer.
He has served two terms as chairman of the fire expo in 2005 and 2006, and before that, served as North Run chair for the annual burn run. In addition to the Fire Expo, Stewart also volunteered for "Share Your Heart Firefighter Night at the Padres and the annual "Give Burns the Boot" Drive.
He has served as a camp counselor at the Burn Institute's Camp Beyond the Scars for burn-injured children. Currently, he serves as a member of the board of directors of the Firefighter Advisory Council to the Burn Institute, which has been instrumental in raising more than $1 million for Burn Institute and fire prevention programs and burn survivor programs such as Camp Beyond the Scars.
When he's not working or volunteering at the Burn Institute, he enjoys spending time with his two boys, Ryan and Thomas.
