Defending track champions travel to Sacramento for state finals

The state track and field finals return to Sacramento City College this weekend, along with a number of defending champions.
Terry Prentice of Pomona Diamond Ranch won state titles in the boys' 110-meter hurdles and long jump last season at Cerritos College. Bryshon Nellum of Long Beach Poly will try to win two consecutive titles in the boys' 200 and 400. Cory Primm of Westlake Village Westlake is the defending champion in the 800, and Michael Cybulski of Simi Valley Royal is the two-time defending 3,200 champion.
In the girls' events, returning defending champions include Christine Babcock of Irvine Woodbridge in the 1,600, Jordan Hasay of San Luis Obispo Mission Prep in the 3,200 and Haley Lawrence of Aliso Viejo Aliso Niguel in the 800.
Ebony Collins of Los Angeles Locke, who won the 300 hurdles while attending Long Beach Wilson last season, did not qualify in that event, but will compete in the 100 hurdles and the 100 and 200 sprints.
Field events for Friday's preliminaries begin at 2 p.m. and running events at 5. Field events for Saturday's finals begin at 3 p.m. and running events at 5.

Boys' Basketball
A group of Southland players have been invited to participate in the National Basketball Players Assn.'s Top 100 High School Camp, June 19-24 at the University of Virginia.
Among the players expected to participate are Larry Drew Jr. from Woodland Hills Taft, Jordan Hamilton from Los Angeles Dorsey, DeMar DeRozan from Compton, Renaldo Woolridge from North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, Klay Thompson from Santa Margarita and Malik Story from Lakewood Artesia.
Softball
The 15th North vs. South Orange County All-Star game, sponsored by the Soroptimist International of Brea/La Habra, will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cal State Fullerton.
Jim Daugherty of Lake Forest El Toro will coach the South, assisted by Troy Ybarra of Mission Viejo and Erin Webber of Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills.
Jamie Shannon of La Palma Kennedy will coach the North, assisted by Michelle Rodriguez of La Habra Sonora and Lance Eddy of Anaheim Canyon.
The Inland Valley High School All-Star game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at Big League Dreams in Mira Loma.
Baseball
The Inland Valley High School All-Star game will take place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga.
Coaching Changes
Greg Saltzberg, who guided Chatsworth's boys' volleyball team to four City Section Championships in eight years as coach, has resigned his teaching and coaching positions to enter the insurance business.
"It's time for me to take on the challenge of trying to provide more for my family," Saltzberg said.
Jonathan Sheriff, a former coach at Reseda, will take over as boys' and girls' coach at Chatsworth.
Saltzberg's record at Chatsworth was 103-26.
