Sylvia Mendez, and her brother, Gonzalo Mendez, pose beside part of the Educational
Opportunity Program mural that features images of their parents, Gonzalo and
Felicitas Mendez, who were among those who fought to desegregate public schools
in Orange County. The mural depicts other civil and educational rights leaders
and is a project celebrating Cal State Fullerton’s 50th anniversary. “I’m
very impressed with the mural,” said Gonzalo Mendez as he gazed at the
painting of his parents. “(The artists) did a good job on everybody!” His
sister, Sylvia Mendez, added: “I love it! My father looks very handsome,
and my mother, looks very beautiful!”
