Whether helping abused and neglected children or volunteering at a soccer clinic that raises money for pediatric cancer research, Cal State Fullerton student-athletes are community-minded, said Michael Miles, athletic academic counselor and adviser for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

SAAC’s mission is to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience at Cal State Fullerton, which includes community service efforts, Miles said.

“One of SAAC’s goals is to connect student athletes with their campus and community,” he said, adding that the committee is comprised of students representing every CSUF sport.

The athletes’ recent community endeavors include a holiday party that benefited the Crittenton Services of Fullerton, which helps strengthen families and provide homes to abused and neglected children.

The men’s soccer team last summer helped out at a soccer clinic, attended by more than 300 children. The clinic benefited Soccer for Hope, a nonprofit organization that donates funds to Irvine-based Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. The foundation helps children in need of treatment that their families cannot afford.

Other activities include Titan Youth Sports Day, when sports activities are coordinated in the community, as well as ongoing community service projects that take place throughout the year.

Student-athletes also are encouraged to donate community service hours through the CHAMPS Titan Cup, a program that aims to create a “total development program.”

“Engaging the student-athlete in service to his or her campus and surrounding communities benefits them because it helps them to see things they’ve never seen before and learn about the needs they never knew existed,” Miles said.
