Golden Ideas for Anniversary Celebration Sought

Faculty, staff, students, supporters and alumni being offered an opportunity to develop and implement ideas that will celebrate this milestone

October 10, 2006

What’s the neatest way that you can think of to celebrate a 50 years of service to students and the community?

Cal State Fullerton wants to know.

The university will mark its golden anniversary during the 2007-08 academic year and is offering faculty, staff, students, supporters and alumni an opportunity to develop and implement ideas that will celebrate this milestone.

“Fifty years of serving the educational needs of Orange County and graduating more than 150,000 alumni — from astronauts and artists to scientists, educators and political leaders — is quite an achievement,” said Beverly Cartwright, 50th anniversary project manager. “And we’re celebrating for an entire academic year. The events sub-committee chaired by Pam Hillman, vice president of advancement; Carrie Stewart, associate vice president of advancement; and Norma Morris from the President’s Office are in the middle of the planning process. Already in the works is a kickoff weekend that begins Sept. 14, 2007, with a special convocation, all-university lunch and anniversary Concert under the Stars. The next day, an alumni picnic, college open houses and a donor recognition event are being planned.”

For previous anniversaries, Cal State Fullerton has celebrated with such special events as a beach party in the Quad, building dedications, special guest speakers and historical exhibitions.

“We see this as a golden opportunity to let the community know more about the campus, its people and its vision for the future,” Cartwright added. “And we know that members of the campus community have wonderful ideas that can do that.”

President Milton A. Gordon has set aside $400,000 to fund proposals for the 50th anniversary celebration.

Ideas submitted must meet one or more of the 50th Anniversary goals listed below:
     • Bring added visibility and recognition to the university, its programs and people.
     • Increase participation in and support for the university and its programs.
     • Strengthen the bonds between our university and the community at large.
     • Focus on the future for California State University, Fullerton.
     • Build an even stronger sense of community for faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Deadline for submitting CSUF Golden Idea proposals to the 50th anniversary office, located in Room 810 of Langsdorf Hall, is 5 p.m. Oct. 27. Forms are available on the web.

All proposals will be evaluated by a review committee and the President’s Administrative Board. Recommendations for funding will be forwarded to the president for final review and approval. Funding decisions are expected in mid-January.
