Chad Cordero was named the Washington Nationals' candidate for Major League Baseball’s Roberto Clemente Award.

October 10, 2006

Former Cal State Fullerton reliever Chad Cordero was named the Washington Nationals' candidate for Major League Baseball’s Roberto Clemente Award, recognizing players who "best exemplify the game of baseball through sportsmanship, community involvement and positive contributions to their teams."

Since 1972, Major League Baseball has presented an annual award (originally known as The Commissioner's Award) which recognizes the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball. In 1973, following Clemente’s death, the award was renamed in his honor.

A panel of baseball dignitaries, including Vera Clemente and Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig, annually selects a winner from a list of 30 nominees, one from each Major League Baseball club. Past winners include Al Leiter, Tony Gwynn, Sammy Sosa, Willie Mays, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, Cal Ripken, Jr. and Kirby Puckett.

Cordero made his MLB debut in August 2003 following his participation in the Titans’ effort at the College World Series. He earned first-team All-Big West honors and was named a third-team All America by College Baseball. He currently carries an earned-run-average of 3.15 and a win-loss record of 7-4.
