Information about Cal State Fullerton

History:

Founded in 1957 by act of the California Legislature. Classes began in fall 1959 in facilities leased from the Fullerton Union High School District. The first commencement was held in June 1960. Classes on the permanent site of the main campus began in fall 1960.

Governance:

As part of The California State University, Cal State Fullerton is subject to policies established by the California Legislature and the CSU Board of Trustees. Governance at the campus level is the responsibility of the President. The Academic Senate, consisting pri¬marily of active faculty, recommends policies affecting curricula.

Statistics:

  • 34,912 enrolled in spring 2011 (57% female); 35,590 enrolled in fall 2010 (58% female); 32,611 enrolled in spring 2010 (58% female); 36,262 in fall 2009 (58% female); 37,765 in spring 2009; 36,996 in fall 2008 (59% female); 36,018 in spring 2008 (58% female).

  • Average age: 24 years. Median age: 22.

  • Ethnic distribution of student body (fall 2010 census): American Indian 0.37%, Asian/Pacific Islander 21%, Black 2.7%, Hispanic 30%, White 31%, Multiple Race Non-Hispanic 2%, Unknown 7% and International Students 5%.

Accreditations:

National accreditations and associations in many disciplines with overall accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Degree Programs:

103 degrees: 54 undergraduate; 49 graduate including a doctorate in education.

National Rankings:

  •  U.S. News & World Report’s 2011 edition of America’s Best Colleges ranks Cal State Fullerton No. 10 among the Top Public Schools: Regional Universities (West).
  • Diverse Issues in Higher Education (June 2010) ranks CSUF fifth in the nation in terms of baccalaureate degrees awarded to minority students, based on data from the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education (May 2010) ranks CSUF No. 1 in California and fifth in the nation among top colleges and universities awarding bachelor’s degrees to Hispanics, based on 2010 data from the U.S. Department of Education.
  • The Steven G. Mihaylo College of Business and Economics, the state’s largest accredited business college, is included in the 2011 edition of Princeton Review’s Best 301 Business Schools.
  • The Templeton Guide: Colleges That Encourage Character Development lists CSUF’s Student Leadership Institute among “Exemplary Programs” in the student leadership category.
