Top Graduate to Share Secrets of Success

Who: Sunshine Lawson, Cal State Fullerton’s top graduate of the Class of ’03, returns to her alma mater next week to share her secrets for academic success in a PowerPoint presentation, “Tools for Change: Success Tips for University Students,” for an audience of freshmen. The public is invited.

When: 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19

Where: Pollak Library, Room 303

Background:

The 34-year-old blind single mother of three teenagers graduated summa cum laude, having achieved a 4.0 grade point average in both of her majors — criminal justice and Afro-ethnic studies. She received the President’s Associates Scholastic Award, the university’s top honor for academic achievement. “I can say in all honesty she is the best student I have instructed in my 15 years of university teaching, which includes Washington State University, Arizona State University and USC,” said James Lasley, Cal State Fullerton professor of criminal justice. Lawson’s presentation will include tips on strategies for selecting classes, networking with other students, meeting with professors, time management techniques and other subjects. Lawson’s professional goal is to become a university professor and to conduct research to help others in need.
