Howser, Saget Headline Communications
Week 2004
by Valerie Orleans
Huell Howser, producer and host of the long-running
PBS program “California’s Gold,” will take part
in a 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, public forum in the Titan Student
Union as one of the many guest speakers during Communications Week
May 3-8.
“California’s Gold,” now in its
14th year, is but one of the programs Howser hosts and produces.
A native of Tennessee, he began his television career at WSM-TV
in Nashville after earning a bachelor’s degree from the University
of Tennessee and serving on the staff of Sen. Howard Baker. Howser
came to California in 1981 as a reporter for KCBS-TV, joining KCET/Los
Angeles in 1987 to produce “Videolog,” a series nominated
for an Emmy Award under his leadership. In addition to “California’s
Gold,” Howser hosts “Visiting...With Huell Howser,”
and his newest production, “California’s Green.”
Also taking part in Comm Week is Bob Saget, probably
best known for his television roles as Danny Tanner on “Full
House” and host of “America’s Funniest Home Videos.”
Saget also served as executive producer and director of “For
Hope,” an ABC film loosely based on the story of his sister,
Gay, who died in 1994 from scleroderma. Two years ago, he was inducted
as an honorary member of the Harvard Lampoon at Harvard University.
Saget will discuss his current film projects and give a behind-the-scenes
look at Hollywood, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, in the Titan Student
Union.
Nearly 100 speakers from the communications and entertainment
industries will participate in the 26th annual festivities. Events
include a town hall discussion (see related story on Page 1), a
poetry slam and lecture/discussions on subjects ranging from the
impact of the movie “The Passion of the Christ” to how
to make your Internet business profitable.
