Model United Nations Participant Honored As Best Speaker at German Conference
by Susan Katsaros

James Day, a political science and criminal justice major who participated in a December Model United Nations Conference in Germany, was awarded best speaker for his efforts in representing Ireland on the United Nations Security Council. He has been invited to attend an upcoming conference in Egypt.

“This was my first trip overseas – and the conference went very well,” said Day whose colleagues on the mock Security Council included doctoral candidates from Cambridge and Oxford, international law and human rights attorneys and students from Belarus, Egypt, Russia, Kosovo and Germany.

The conference in Egypt will be attended by primarily representatives from Arab countries, Day noted.

“Cal State Fullerton will be representing Israel at the April MUN conference in New York, and I think they wanted someone to represent the Israeli perspective at the March conference in Cairo,” said Day.

Along with Day, five Cal State Fullerton students attended the first Bonn International Model United Nations organized by the University of Bonn in Germany. The focus of the conference was “Human Rights – Reaching the 2015 Goal.”
About 160 participants from around the world attended six simulated U.N. committees. The goal of the conference was to provide participants with a realistic impression of the work performed by the various committees of the United Nations.

Following graduation, Day will be commissioned as a naval intelligence officer in Virginia Beach, Va.
