Cal State Fullerton to Be
Honored by
Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities
Cal State Fullerton President Milton A. Gordon,
on behalf of the university, will receive the Hispanic Association
of Colleges and Universities Outstanding HACU Member Institution
Award during the national association’s 17th annual conference
Oct. 18-21 in Garden Grove.
The award recognizes and honors “extraordinary
efforts and success” by a HACU-member college, university
or system that has excelled in advancing the mission and goals of
the association.
Based in San Antonio, HACU represents more than 350
colleges and universities that collectively enroll two-thirds of
all Hispanics in higher education. The association exists to promote
the development of member colleges and universities; to improve
access to and the quality of postsecondary educational opportunities
for Hispanic students; and to meet the needs of business, industry
and government through the development and sharing of resources,
information and expertise.
Cal State Fullerton is ranked eighth in the Hispanic
Outlook in Higher Education listing of the top 100 colleges and
universities conferring bachelor’s degrees on Hispanics. The
university also is ranked 10th in the nation for the number of Hispanic
administrators and faculty members it employs.
In addition, the university is recognized by the U.S.
Department of Education as a Hispanic-Serving Institution.
A member of the HACU Governing Board, Gordon served
as a panel moderator at HACU’s 2003 National Capitol Forum
on Hispanic Higher Education in Washington, D.C.
The award will be presented to Gordon during the conference’s
Partnership Luncheon at noon Oct. 20 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
On the eve of the national conference, where more
than 1,000 attendees are expected, Cal State Fullerton will host
about 600 area high school students on campus for the HACU Youth
Leadership Day. The Oct. 17 youth event will feature talks by HACU
President Antonio Flores, State Sen. Joseph Dunn (D-Garden Grove)
and Assemblyman Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana), a Cal State Fullerton
graduate, as well as workshops and campus tours.
