Cal State Fullerton’s Alpha Chi Omega sorority is taking a stand against drunk driving.
On Thursday, March 20, the sorority will hold a “MADD Bash” at the Alpha Chi Omega house, 700 E. Chapman Ave., to raise money in support of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Proceeds from the event will go toward the sorority’s team participation in the May 10 “Walk Like MADD” at Huntington City Beach, a 5K noncompetitive walk and fund-raiser for the nonprofit grass roots organization.
The MADD Bash will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. and sorority members will discuss the need to eliminate underage drinking and driving. Cal State Fullerton students may purchase MADD Bash tickets from sorority members and tickets also will be available at the door. A minimum donation of $5 is requested.
Alpha Chi Omega, which has 84 members, will celebrate its 40th anniversary on campus next fall, said Nick Katz, Cal State Fullerton’s Greek Life coordinator. Since the inception of the “Greek 5 Star Pursuit of Excellence Awards” in 2005, sponsored by the Dean of Students, Alpha Chi Omega Sorority has been a ‘Five Star’ Chapter exceeding the Greek Life’s Office chapter expectations, Katz noted.
“Members of Alpha Chi Omega sorority are passionate, intelligent and well-balanced student leaders on campus,” Katz said. “The importance of collaborating with the Orange County affiliate of Mother’s Against Drunk Driving will provide life long lessons for chapter members, family and friends.”
Cal State Fullerton offers many programs and projects to raise awareness about drinking and driving, including efforts to reduce underage drinking and underage access to alcohol.
Since its inception in 1980, MADD has focused much of its efforts on preventing underage drinking. In 1999, MADD expanded its work on preventing underage drinking and emerging research underscored its efforts to prevent youth alcohol use.
